Getting started
Where is Edinburgh Motorcycle Training?
Edinburgh Motorcycle Training is at 15 Clippens Yard, Straiton, EH20 9NS, in the Clippens industrial estate opposite Straiton retail park. It is 5 minutes from the A720 Edinburgh bypass and there is parking on site. Some training also takes place at the nearby Straiton Park and Ride, which has a large area free from obstructions and traffic.
I have never ridden a motorcycle. Where do I start?
Start with the 1.5 hour Introduction to Motorcycling (ITM) for £55. Edinburgh Motorcycle Training requires novice riders to complete an ITM before a CBT. After that you take a CBT (£195 weekdays, £210 weekends), which lets you ride a 125cc on the road with L-plates.
What age do I need to be to ride a motorcycle?
You can ride a moped (up to 50cc) at 16 and a motorcycle up to 125cc and 11kW at 17, both after completing a CBT. You must be at least 17 for an A1 licence, 19 for an A2 licence and 24 for a full A licence by Direct Access, or 21 if you have held an A2 licence for 2 years.
Do I need my own motorcycle or kit?
No. Motorcycles are supplied for ITM, CBT and DAS courses and helmets can be provided, though you are welcome to bring your own. You need sturdy footwear that covers the ankle, trousers (no shorts), sturdy gloves and a thick jacket. For Enhanced Rider Scheme training you ride your own motorcycle.
How many students are there per instructor?
Edinburgh Motorcycle Training trains a maximum of 2 students per instructor on ITM, CBT, CBT renewal and DAS. Confidence, gear conversion and A1/A2 training can be booked one-to-one, and Back-to-Biking and the Enhanced Rider Scheme are always one-to-one.
CBT
What is CBT?
CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training. It is a mandatory course for anyone who wants to ride a moped or motorcycle on public roads in the UK without a full motorcycle licence, designed to make sure you can ride safely on the road.
How much does a CBT cost?
At Edinburgh Motorcycle Training a CBT costs £195 per person on weekdays and £210 at weekends and on bank holidays. A CBT renewal is £175. The price includes the motorcycle, a helmet if you need one and up to 12 hours of training.
What does the CBT course cover?
CBT has five modules: an introduction and eyesight check, on-site training on the controls and basic checks, on-site riding, on-road theory and briefing, and at least two hours of on-road riding with your instructor in radio contact.
How long does the CBT take?
CBT should be completed within one day. At Edinburgh Motorcycle Training a total of 12 hours is included in the price, so if your instructor decides you need an additional session to complete the course it is already paid for. Any further training must be completed within 28 days of the original course.
What do I need to bring to my CBT?
Bring your valid UK driving licence (provisional or full), sturdy footwear that covers the ankle, trousers (not shorts), sturdy gloves and a thick jacket. Helmets can be provided, but bring your own if you have one. You also need a good working knowledge of English.
Can I use my own motorcycle for CBT?
Yes, if it is insured, roadworthy, taxed, has a valid MOT where applicable and displays L-plates. Otherwise a training motorcycle or scooter is provided.
What if I do not complete the CBT on the day?
CBT is not a pass or fail test, but your instructor will only issue the certificate when you can ride safely. At Edinburgh Motorcycle Training the price covers up to 12 hours, which allows a second session within 28 days at no extra cost.
What can I ride after CBT?
After completing CBT you can ride a moped at 16, or a motorcycle up to 125cc at 17, on the road with L-plates. You cannot carry a passenger or use motorways. You must pass your full test within 2 years or renew your CBT. If you did your CBT on an automatic you are restricted to automatics until you complete a gear conversion.
Direct Access (DAS)
What is DAS?
DAS stands for Direct Access Scheme. It is the route to a full category A motorcycle licence for riders aged 24 or over, allowing you to ride a motorcycle of any size and power. Riders aged 19 to 23 follow the same training for an A2 licence on a smaller machine.
How much does a DAS course cost?
At Edinburgh Motorcycle Training the 4-day DAS course costs £1,140 and the 5-day course costs £1,440. Both include the 3 hour pre-DAS assessment. A £440 deposit is paid at booking, with two further instalments at the start of Day 1 and Day 4.
Should I book the 4-day or the 5-day DAS course?
You do not choose. Every DAS student completes a 3 hour pre-DAS assessment on the Thursday before training starts, and the instructor assigns you to the 4-day or 5-day course depending on the skill level you show. The extra day is a conversion day from a 125cc to the larger bike.
What do I need before starting DAS?
You need a valid CBT certificate and a valid motorcycle theory test certificate. Both must be produced at training and taken to each test, along with your UK driving licence.
What tests are included in the DAS course?
Two. Module 1 is an off-road test of slow control, a slalom and figure of eight, a U-turn, and the emergency stop and hazard avoidance exercises. Module 2 is a road ride lasting around 40 minutes where the examiner assesses your riding and your ability to follow directions.
Do I need my own motorcycle for DAS?
No. Motorcycles are supplied as part of the course. You are encouraged to bring your own protective clothing (jacket, trousers, gloves, boots). Helmets can be provided.
What happens if I have to resit Module 1 or Module 2?
Resit costs are not included in the course price. You pay the DVSA test fee again plus any additional training, which covers motorcycle hire and your instructor by the hour. You have to wait 3 working days before retaking Module 1 and 10 working days before retaking Module 2.
What happens after I pass DAS?
After passing Module 2 on a category A motorcycle you hold a full unrestricted motorcycle licence and can ride any motorcycle, without L-plates, with a passenger and on motorways.
