Direct Access Scheme (DAS)

Edinburgh Motorcycle Training runs Direct Access (DAS) courses at Straiton, EH20 9NS, 5 minutes from the A720 Edinburgh bypass. The 4-day course costs £1,140 and the 5-day course costs £1,440. Both include the pre-DAS assessment and cover Module 1 and Module 2 training and tests. A £440 deposit secures your place, with the balance paid in two instalments.

What is the Direct Access (DAS) course?

A 4 or 5-day course covering Modules 1 and 2 training and tests. Direct Access lets you obtain a full motorcycle licence so you can ride a motorcycle of any size and power without restrictions, if you are 24 or over, or 21 and over under the progressive access route.

Your pre-DAS assessment decides which course you join. Students allocated to the 4-day course join on Day 2.

Who is it for?

  • Riders aged 24 or over who want a full category A licence
  • Riders aged 19 to 23 going for an A2 licence
  • Riders with a CBT and theory certificate who are ready for a big bike

What is included?

What do I need?

What happens on each day of the DAS course?

DayWhat happens
Day 1Conversion day. 125cc to 700cc (450cc for A2). Usually a Friday or Saturday. 5-day students only.
Day 2Module 1 training. Preparation for the Module 1 test. Usually a Saturday or Sunday. 4-day students join here.
Day 3Module 1 test. Usually the Tuesday after Day 2, subject to DVSA availability, followed by the start of Module 2 training in the afternoon.
Day 4Module 2 training. A full day of on-road training. Usually the Friday, Saturday or Sunday at the end of the week after the Module 1 test.
Day 5Module 2 test. Usually the Monday following Module 2 training, subject to DVSA availability. Ends at about 2:00pm.

Good to know

  • Test days are subject to DVSA availability.
  • A deposit of £440 is payable on the day of booking on to either course, with two further instalments payable at the start of Day 1 and Day 4.
  • Resit costs are not included in the course price.

How long does DAS take?

The course is 4 or 5 training and test days spread over roughly two weeks: conversion day, Module 1 training, Module 1 test, a full day of Module 2 training, then the Module 2 test. Test days depend on DVSA availability.

What do I need before I can start DAS?

A valid CBT certificate and a valid motorcycle theory test certificate. Both must be produced at training and taken to each test.
